Special Education Info Sessions

During the 2023-24 school year, the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) will be hosting virtual special education information sessions to assist parents/guardians in learning more about programs, supports and ways that we work together to support students with special education needs. 

Participants are asked to register for each session using this form. Information to access the sessions will be shared via email with individuals who have pre-registered once registration has closed. Registration for each session will close at 12 p.m. the day before.


IEPs and school-based assessments – information for parents/guardians

Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Learn more about Individual Education Plans (IEP) and school-based assessments that are used in SCDSB schools. This virtual presentation will include opportunities for participants to share their questions regarding IEPs and school-based assessments.

Transition planning

Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m.

This virtual session will include SCDSB staff and community partners that work to support early years transitions of students with special education needs into kindergarten. We will also look at the supports in place to successfully transition students from Grade 8 to Grade 9. We will provide further details about transitioning from secondary school to post-secondary education, to the workplace or to community living. Information about Developmental Services Ontario (DSO) will be shared with an opportunity for a question period at the end of the presentation.

Reading strategies

March 19 at 6:30 p.m.

This virtual session will focus on foundational literacy, where we will provide valuable insights and practical tips on how schools and families can work together to support your child’s early reading development at home. Our session will include SCDSB Special Education and Literacy staff, who will share strategies, resources, and activities that you can easily incorporate into your daily routines to foster a love for reading and language in your home – in addition to the instruction and supports they receive at school.

Supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

April 16 at 6:30 p.m.

In this virtual session, SCDSB staff will discuss the support available in SCDSB schools and the community for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).


Every day mental health strategies

May 14 at 6:30 p.m.

We all want our children to feel mentally well, grow up happy, and learn how to navigate life’s challenges. Virtually join members of the SCDSB Mental Health and Well-Being and Special Education teams as we share resources from School Mental Health Ontario (www.smho-smso.ca) to support students of all ages with their mental health. 

Registration for this session will be available on April 14.
