Business Services

Business Services provides support and guidance to all students, school communities and employees of the SCDSB.  With multiple areas including budgeting and reporting, finance, purchasing, risk management, school business support and Education Centre services (reception, mailroom, courier services), our team ensures the SCDSB is meeting public sector standards of accountability and transparency. Our team strives for excellence in customer service to both internal and external stakeholders, while at the same time ensuring, enhancing, fostering and promoting the strategic priorities of the board. We have a variety of supporting and leadership roles in the department for candidates who demonstrate a commitment to teamwork and learning.

Communications

The SCDSB Communications team supports the exchange of clear, accurate information about board and school issues and activities among all education stakeholders, including school communities, staff, students, trustees, school councils, parents, volunteers, the media, government representatives and other community members. Our services include: 

  • writing, editing and disseminating news releases
  • responding and coordinating responses to media inquiries
  • providing media advice and consultation
  • providing media training
  • generating publicity for system and school events and programs
  • developing promotional and instructional videos to support board programs and initiatives
  • editing and reviewing SCDSB brochures and publications
  • facilitating corporate communications
  • consulting regarding issues management
  • planning, implementing and evaluating communications initiatives
  • posting information and updating content on the public website

Custodian

The custodial department is responsible for maintaining clean, safe and healthy learning and working environments for students, staff, and community users. Custodians are scheduled to work shifts as required, which may include day or evening shifts. All custodian positions report directly to a regional operations supervisor and are members of CUPE Local 1310. 

Types of roles within the department:

  • Custodian
  • Chief Custodian (elementary school team leader)
  • Lead Hand Custodian (secondary school team leader, mainly afternoon shift)
  • Group Leader (secondary school team leader, mainly day shift)
  • Project Team Custodian

Typical requirements for the positions/departments:

Qualifications and skills required include knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment, ability to perform heavy physical tasks, ability to operate building and custodial equipment and ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Design and Construction

The Design and Construction Department ensures that schools meet the needs of our students and staff, and provide an environment that promotes effective learning. The Design and Construction Department oversees major renovations, additions and construction of new buildings.The department also ensures that facility drawings are maintained and up to date.

Designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE)

Reporting to the principal, DECEs partner with the Kindergarten teacher to plan and implement a full-day early learning program. DECEs collaborate in the design of programs and environments that enhance children's cognitive, physical, social and emotional development. 

 

Typical requirements for the position/department:
DECEs require a two-year diploma in early childhood education from a community college, proof of current membership with the College of Early Childhood Educators and a minimum of six months recent experience working in an early learning centre or day care.

They also require knowledge of the Ministry of Education’s full-day kindergarten program, the ability to communicate in a sensitive, courteous manner with children, parents, staff and the general public, proven ability to follow directions, policies and procedures in an appropriate and timely manner, understanding of and commitment to confidentiality, proven ability to deal with difficult situations and to take appropriate action in stressful or emergency situations according to policies and procedures, experience planning and implementing age-appropriate programs and basic computer skills, strong organization and time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines. 

Current CPR and first aid certification is an asset.

Educational Assistant (EA)

Educational assistants (EA) provide support to 11,000 special education students to achieve success in behaviour, social and life skills situations. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, educational assistants contribute to the learning development and integration of assigned students by creating a safe and supportive environment that facilitates achievement of individual student goals.  

As a temporary measure to facilitate post-pandemic recruitment, the SCDSB will accept applications from candidates with any two-year diploma from a ministry-accredited college, and any three-year degree from a ministry-accredited university, or a combination of education and experience.


These positions can be physically demanding. Position requirements may include assisting students with toileting, diapering, feeding, lifting, transferring, positioning and mobility as required.

  • EA in Autism Spectrum Disorder county class
  • EA with sign language skills (e.g. American Sign Language)
  • EA with Braille skills
  • EA in social skills county class
  • EA in developmental/life skills class

Typical requirements for the position/department:
Educational assistant positions require a relevant university degree, or a two-year college diploma in the human services field, such as behavioural sciences - related to ABA, child and youth worker, child care worker, developmental service worker, early childhood education, educational assistant – special needs support, human services administration, registered nurse, sign language communicator, sign language interpreter, social service worker or an Ontario Teaching Certificate. 

Educational assistants require excellent communication, interpersonal skills, organizational skills and the ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) training or Non-violent Crisis Intervention certification would be an asset. Sign language skills are preferred.  Previous experience supporting children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), especially in areas of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) including behavioural strategies, data collection and implementing programs to modify, improve and teach new behaviours will be preferred.

Elementary Teacher

Typical requirements for the position:
Elementary teaching roles require an active registration in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). Our board encourages obtaining at least the following elementary qualifications: all basic divisions (Primary, Junior and Intermediate) and special education.  

At this time, qualifications are in demand in French as a second language, math, music and native studies.

Human Resources

The Human Resource Department provides support, advice and leadership to the organization regarding personnel and labour relations. The department has three branches: Payroll, Health and Wellness and Human Resource Services. These branches work together to support employees throughout their career with the SCDSB. Human resources provides the following services: employee recruitment, record keeping, labour law compliance, payroll/compensation, benefits administration, internal relations, compliance and safety.

Information Technology Services (ITS)

The Information Technology Services (ITS) team supports all aspects of information technology for staff at the SCDSB Education Centre and at all SCDSB sites across the county. Services include application development and support, technology infrastructure (e.g. network, phone, server, storage, security), end-user technical support (computers, iPads, projectors, printers) and helpdesk and software support services. The team includes about 50 individuals who work to ensure reliable and effective IT services for our students and staff.

Maintenance and Environmental Services

The Maintenance and Environmental Services Department is responsible for the planning and implementation of maintenance and repair programs for building systems and components at all SCDSB schools and buildings, waste and energy management and conservation and environmental programs and initiatives. Staff strive to deliver responsive, efficient, cost effective and regulatory compliant support services to provide safe and supportive learning and working environments for students and staff at over 110 sites.

Typical requirements for the position/department:

  • Maintenance Supervisors require a certificate of qualification and/or an engineering technologist designation in the trade of their respective area of responsibility
  • Environmental supervisors/coordinators require a university degree in an environmental or energy related discipline
  • Maintenance trades staff require a certificate of qualification in the appropriate trade
  • Preventative Maintenance Persons and Maintenance Helpers require an appropriate amount of relevant experience in building system maintenance
  • Administrative support positions (dispatch and clerk) require relevant education/experience in office administration, and preferably some experience with building maintenance systems

  • Manager of Social Work Services require a Masters of Social Work and registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers 
  • Mental Health Leads require a Masters or PhD in Social Work, Psychology or Psychiatry, and registration with the college governing mental health professionals
  • Principal of Well-being must be a principal in the SCDSB to be considered for this position
  • Social Workers require Bachelor of Social Work and registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
  • Child and Youth Workers require a three-year college diploma in child and youth worker or child and youth care, or an equivalent three-year college diploma/university degree with a focus on child and youth studies 
  • Attendance Counsellors require a university degree in psychology, sociology or a related field, and being a member of the Ontario Association for Counselling and Attendance Services (OACAS) would be considered an asset

Office and Clerical

Operations, Facility Services

The Operations Department provides cleaning and general maintenance services at all board facilities to ensure safe and healthy learning and working environments for students, staff and community users.  The services provided by the operations team include custodial services, general maintenance and repairs, winter maintenance, sites/grounds maintenance, alarm response/security, pest control, coordination of portable moves and fleet management.  The operations team is typically the first to respond to facility emergency situations as they strive to ensure the safe operations of SCDSB schools.

Planning, Enrolment and Community Use

The department has three divisions which are integrated yet unique.   

The planning team provides support, advice and recommendations to the organization for all property and accommodation-related decisions, such as timing and approvals of new schools, attendance area changes, use of school space, leases, land acquisition and facility partnerships. They also coordinates the boards childcare and before and after school program initiatives.  

Admissions and enrolment coordinates the administration of the student information management system (PowerSchool) and supports board PowerSchool users in the areas of recording and reporting student information for over 52,000 students. This can include attendance, enrolment registers, report cards, EQAO data and Ministry of Education reporting. 

Community Use of Schools provides support to the organization, schools, municipalities and community through the coordination and administration of permit contracts and joint use/reciprocal agreements for the after-hours use of board facilities.  We serve and support 11 municipalities, more than 700 community groups and over 350 internal clients, and process approximately 3,000 rental contracts annually.

Typical requirements for the position/department:
Planning: A degree in urban planning or related field and eligibility for membership in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute is required. Related experience also preferred. Child care-related position require a minimum of a degree or diploma in early childhood education, and previous administrative or supervisory experience. 

Admissions and Enrolment: Most positions require post-secondary education. Related experience and educational background in the areas of information technology, computer studies or business is preferred. 

Community Use: The Community and Facility Use Coordinator position requires post-secondary education in business or a related field, and related experience. Permit Clerk positions require a Grade 12 diploma.

Psychological Services

Psychological services provides psychoeducational assessments and consultation services to students, parents and schools.

Psychologists and Psychological Associates must be registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario or be eligible to register under the School Psychology classification.
