Educational assistants (EA) provide support to 11,000 special education students to achieve success in behaviour, social and life skills situations. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, educational assistants contribute to the learning development and integration of assigned students by creating a safe and supportive environment that facilitates achievement of individual student goals.
As a temporary measure to facilitate post-pandemic recruitment, the SCDSB will accept applications from candidates with any two-year diploma from a ministry-accredited college, and any three-year degree from a ministry-accredited university, or a combination of education and experience.
These positions can be physically demanding. Position requirements may include assisting students with toileting, diapering, feeding, lifting, transferring, positioning and mobility as required.

- EA in Autism Spectrum Disorder county class
- EA with sign language skills (e.g. American Sign Language)
- EA with Braille skills
- EA in social skills county class
- EA in developmental/life skills class
Typical requirements for the position/department:
Educational assistant positions require a relevant university degree, or a two-year college diploma in the human services field, such as behavioural sciences - related to ABA, child and youth worker, child care worker, developmental service worker, early childhood education, educational assistant – special needs support, human services administration, registered nurse, sign language communicator, sign language interpreter, social service worker or an Ontario Teaching Certificate.
Educational assistants require excellent communication, interpersonal skills, organizational skills and the ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) training or Non-violent Crisis Intervention certification would be an asset. Sign language skills are preferred. Previous experience supporting children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), especially in areas of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) including behavioural strategies, data collection and implementing programs to modify, improve and teach new behaviours will be preferred.
